Gadolinium

What is Gadolinium?

Gadolinium is rare earth metal with a metallic luster which is soluble in dilute acid. Gadolinium is strongly magnetic at room temperature and has a magnetocaloric effect; its temperature increases when it enters a magnetic field and decreases when it leaves the magnetic field.

Due to Gadolinium’s paramagnetic properties, it is used as intravenous radiocontrast agents to enhance images in medical magnetic resonance imaging. Gadolinium-containing contrast agents make tissues appear brighter. These contrast agents are made under the names Omniscan, OptiMARK, Magnevist, ProHance, and MultiHance. Gadolinium is also used for making color television tubes, compact discs and computer memory.

In kidney patients who develop NSF/NFD, the gadolinium metal is often found in their skin. Kidney/renal failure patients have impaired ability to excrete wastes; the kidneys are unable to perform filtering due to nephron damage. Kidney failure is referred to as either acute, chronic, end-stage renal disease.

Legal Help for Kidney Patients

If you or a loved were injected with a gadolinium contrast agent during an MRI or MRA and developed Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis / Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermotherapy (NSF/NFD), you have legal rights. Kidney disease patients are encouraged to contact our lawyers today for a FREE case review.
